Previously, we talked about bamboo travel accessories and shared tips and recommendations for eco-friendly items you can add to your travel bag to help reduce your impact on the environment.
Whether you’re flying to a faraway island or exploring your own neighborhood, there are so many ways to help protect the environment.
Here are a few simple tips for having the most eco-friendly holiday this summer.
1. Turn off the lights
This is probably the easiest and most obvious eco-travel tip to follow : turn off the lights when you are not using them. There are a billion people in the world living without electricity, and if you’re reading this, I’m guessing you’re not one of them and that you can adopt more environmentally friendly travel habits. You can think of it like this : every minute of wasted energy means releasing a portion of CO2 into the air.
2. Turn off the taps
Turn off the water while brushing your teeth and take shorter showers. Many people around the world do not have the luxury of water coming conveniently from their tap as we do in the West. Making a conscious effort to conserve water can go a long way. It’s a no-brainer when it comes to living an environmentally friendly life.

Always refuse plastic bags when shopping. You can opt for reusable bags made of fabric or paper for your shopping trips.

4. Bring your reusable gear
Making room for a reusable coffee cup, a water bottle, and other utensils in an already overpacked suitcase is not always the most fun ritual. But holidays can mean tons of plastic and polystyrene waste.

5. Invest in environmentally friendly products
There is no reason to accept a plastic straw today. There are so many alternative straws that I can’t believe plastic straws are still around. We have straws made of silicone, metal, bamboo and paper. (Our favorites are bamboo.) It’s a very simple solution that can have a major impact on your plastic consumption.
But it’s not just straws. There are disposable razors, coffee cups and lids, shampoo bottles, etc. The list goes on.
Always choose small eco-friendly travel products that will reduce your waste.
6. Use public transport
Sometimes, flying is the only possible way to get to your holiday destination. But otherwise, when possible, you can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by not renting a car and using public transport. Take the bus or train, cycle, or walk instead of driving.
7. Bring your toiletries
I like traveling with my own toiletries, not only because they are often better than the ones hotels provide, but also because I don’t waste those plastic shampoo, lotion, and soap bottles in hotel bathrooms,
Don’t forget to travel with your own eco-friendly shower accessories, think of toothbrushes, their cases, and bamboo wood combs and hairbrushes.
