Why a bamboo toothbrush ? - BambooHomeStore

Why a bamboo toothbrush ?

That's a good question! 🧐

Why choose a bamboo toothbrush rather than one made from another material? The answer is environmental. Indeed, measures for the environment are being taken year after year to limit the production of everyday items such as cotton swabs and straws made from overly polluting materials such as plastic.

So why bamboo ?

You may learn that bamboo is a true Swiss Army knife of nature. That is why at Bamboo Home Store we have made it our emblem and our raw material.
In addition to being a hardy plant, bamboo grows without the help of fertilizer or pesticide.
A bamboo forest can absorb 30% CO2 and release just as much oxygen. This plant is used in all these fields: cosmetics, cooking, the making of exotic furniture, etc...
The bamboo toothbrush is considered to be a so-called  eco-friendly toothbrush. However, it is not the only one trying to overshadow our traditional toothbrushes.😉

Eco-friendly toothbrushes:

Brushing your teeth is an essential daily habit for good oral hygiene. On the other hand, the production of conventional plastic toothbrushes represents 1,400 tonnes of waste per year in France and nearly 5 billion worldwide.
However, alternatives do exist: here are a few examples:

There are 4 of them :

  • bioplastic toothbrushes
  • electric toothbrushes (ETs)
  • the Siwak stick
  • bamboo toothbrushes

Bioplastic toothbrushes:

We admit it, the combination of organic and plastic may seem a little strange, but it does exist. If you do a quick search online, you will certainly find Edith or Monte Bianco toothbrushes.
They are made with natural silk and their brush head is replaceable. The handle is made of polyamide, the bristles of polypropylene and biodegradable plastic.

Electric toothbrushes (ETs):

Now we're getting into the high-end of brushing. In the same way as with Monte Bianco toothbrushes, you keep the handle and change the brush heads.
They have the benefit of being able to remove up to 5 times more dental plaque than manual brushing.
Stylish and ergonomic, they are very easy to handle. One button turns it on, and it switches off automatically at the end of the timer, ensuring the 2 to 3 minutes needed for proper brushing.
The best-known ETs are offered by the brands Philips Sonicare diamont clean smart, Oral B, and Kolibree.

Some connect to your smart phone via Bluetooth.

Equipped with pressure sensors that even tell you whether you have brushed your teeth properly. Rechargeable, they are sold with a base connected to an electrical outlet.
You simply place the brush on the attachment provided after use to recharge it. You will generally find 2 types of brushes, oscillating-rotating and sonic. More details =>

However, their manufacture remains not very eco-friendly because of the technology inside them. It must be acknowledged that they offer higher-quality, effortless brushing and are especially fun for little monsters who would otherwise be reluctant to brush their baby teeth.😬
Nevertheless, despite all these advantages, these ETs are not recommended by the French Dental Union.  More details =>

Siwak, the natural toothbrush:

Siwak can be considered the ancestor of the toothbrush. Derived from the branches of Salvadora persica, it comes in the form of a stick about 20 cm long.
Dental hygiene was already practiced in Antiquity using Siwak sticks, also called arak sticks. Simply using it on our teeth helps aid digestion, fight dental plaque and tartar, and promote teeth whitening.

How to use it :

  • Cut it in 2
  • Burn the end of the first stick over a flame. Soak the second in hot water, then cut one end along the fibers to obtain a brush.
  • Rub the burned side (once cooled) on the teeth until the black disappears from the stick. Then rub the other Siwak, previously soaked in rapeseed oil for example, using the exposed brush-like end.

Cut off the used ends and repeat the same process with each use. On average, you can use one stick about ten times.

The first few times you use it, you may be surprised😅

Bamboo toothbrushes:

The bamboo toothbrush has advantages that make it a perfect example of a so-called eco-responsible purchase.👍

They are generally sold with these 5 characteristics

  1. A biodegradable bamboo wood handle, generally made from "Moso" from the bamboo family not eaten by our panda friends. 🐼
  2. BPA-free bristles : bamboo toothbrushes are made without plastic and therefore without Bisphenol A (BPA) which is an additive used in the manufacture of traditional toothbrushes.
  3. A lifespan equivalent to conventional toothbrushes (about 3 months
  4. Bristles in Nylon-6 : the latter is made from a derivative "of castor oil" which gives it its eco-friendly aspect. Unlike the handle, which is biodegradable, nylon-6 bristles are not biodegradable but they are recyclable.
  5. Their price is roughly the same as that  of plastic toothbrushes.

Where can I find my bamboo toothbrush?

You can find your bamboo toothbrush in some pharmacies. However, online, you will find a wider choice of toothbrushes that will largely have the same properties listed above.
By browsing our shop you will certainly find what you are looking for among our toothbrushes sold in packs, some of them supplied with a case, ideal for your travels.

How do I recycle my bamboo toothbrush?

A bamboo toothbrush is biodegradable and compostable.
At Bamboo home store, we go further by always trying to find a second life for what might otherwise end up at the dump.

The video below illustrates my point very well.

Eco-friendly and economical. To conclude, the bamboo toothbrush is one of the essential items on the road to zero waste.
Along the same lines, you have certainly already heard of eco-friendly black charcoal toothpastes. You will find them in any organic store or on certain e-commerce shops such as Lamazuna.
However, still be wary of organic cosmetics.

I invite you to read the article below which goes into more detail on the subject of so-called eco-friendly cosmetics.

We recommend instead switching to D.I.Y mode ("do it yourself" in English): making your own cleaning and hygiene products.
Getting and making certain everyday products such as shampoos, soap, or toothpaste is not that complicated.

Homemade toothpaste recipe bamboo home store:

In a bowl, mix:

  • One teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide (eliminates bacteria)
  • One teaspoon of baking soda (do not use every day because it is slightly abrasive and may irritate the gums)
  • One drop of peppermint essence, ideal for fighting bad breath.
